Project title: Packet length issues in high-speed packet-switched networks.

Description

We are looking at the uses of network processor techniques to match packet forwarding speed to increasing line transmission rates. One of the issues of concern as rates increase is the reduced packet duration. The project will model the bottlenecks caused by the resulting increased packet processing requirements and will investigate techniques for reducing these by, for example, applying protocols to increase the average packet length in the network.

Recently we have begun to consider how to apply such techniques to optimise the packet traffic for transmission over optical networks. Optical burst switched networks and circuit switched networks require their units of data much longer than are generated by today's packet switched networks if they are to efficiently exploit the potential bandwidth of all-optical transmission and switching.
