This article is an informal presentation of recent attempts to reproduce the phenomena of ``computational autopoiesis'' first investigated by Francisco Varela, Humberto Maturana and Ricardo Uribe almost 25 years ago (Varela et al., 1974). A more formal discussion is available in (McMullin & Varela, 1997).
