Fab LabĀ“s Cloud Hub Application

Fab Lab technologies are used to enable students to fabricate small scale prototypes to grasp the theoretical concepts covered in class using a hands-on approach. It also strives to develop various skills among students such as creativity, problem solving and team work. Thanks to Fab Lab tools students design and fabricate design products using a remote 3D printer. It involves four stages:

  • 3D modeling
  • 3D printing
  • using the platform to send the files
  • and fabricate

Students are required to use FreeCAD, which is an online 3D printing design tool accessible to beginners and experienced designers to design products. Students are provided with paper-based and video-based tutorials which explain how to work in different workbenches, how to visualize the 3D model from different views (top, bottom and front view as well as axonometric views), how to create primitive objects and transforming them or how to do Boolean operations. After that, students learn how to use Ultimaker Cura to prepare models for 3D printing. For novices, it makes it easy to get great results. Students are provided with tutorials to learn how to import stereolitographic files, how to prepare the print set up and assign the model parameters as quality, infill, material, speed or support.

Finally, students start to 3D print their desings, a process that involves to take a digital 3D model and turn that digital file into a physical object. In order to do that, once a 3D model is designed, the file must be converted into G-code. The printer then deposits the molten plastic layer by layer until an entire object is fabricated. Finally, the cloud hub application allows students remote access to digital fabrication machines.
