Final Frontier

Final Frontier game is a 3D interactive educational video game. The game makes use of personalisation, gamification and game-based learning methodology to teach concepts about solar system to children up to 12 years old. The game can be used as a stand-alone application or as part of the Earth Course Large-Scale Pilot available under the NEWTELP platform.

The player starts the game on a spaceship. An avatar teacher guides the player and gives to the player missions to be completed. The game has two parts that can be played separately.

Final Frontier

The first part of the game teaches concepts related to the rocky planets (Mercury, Venus and Mars) and the Moon satellite. It consists of a set of game levels to be played, corresponding to each planet. Each level has an objective (e.g. collect meteorites, reach a destination point, etc.), challenges to be solved and a puzzle based knowledge assessment. The player is teleported from the spaceship to a planet to complete the given mission and later on the player is brought back.

The second part of the game supports self-directed learning about both rocky planets and the giant gas planets (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune). Children are encouraged to explore a virtual library located on the spaceship and read facts about the planets and the Solar system. The virtual library has rooms specific to each planet where a visual-based representation of different facts related to a planet are presented.
