Interactive Personalised Virtual Labs

The Virtual Labs place the learner in the centre of the learning experience through implementation of personalisation, inquiry-based learning, and self-directed learning. These pedagogies, combined with interactive activities and the use of multimedia, make them an engaging, encouraging, and fun learning environment. These innovative pedagogies are widely recognised as being beneficial as students learn to carry out their own experiments, analyse and question, and take responsibility for their own learning. Most importantly, personalisation makes the learning experience an individual one, as one size does not fit all in education. . In the lab students are active participants, not passive listeners: they are in charge of their own learning.

Experience in the laboratory and exercising scientific skills are key factors in science education, to empower the future scientists with a skillset that fills the needs of the scientific community. It is important that laboratory practices give students the confidence to deal with real issues in realistic environments.

The number of graduates from science degrees in Europe has decreased in recent years, and the gender imbalance very much exists, despite efforts to encourage more girls to study science and engineering. Provide students with the chance of practicing scientific skills requires enormous investment in time, funding and resources, which are always limited.

Virtual laboratories have been hailed as the answer to the problems faced by educational institutions struggling to offer Science students the experimental learning experiences they need. Organizing laboratory spaces is time consuming, expensive, and requires mindfulness of health and safety regulations.

Virtual labs offer a space for empirical learning, and provide students with the chance to experiment repeatedly with different solutions to problems in Science.

Personalisation in this virtual lab is implemented at different levels throughout the entire learning journey such as:

Atomic Structure Virtual Lab

Atomic Structure is an Interactive Personalised Virtual lab where students can learn the components and functions of atoms and isotopes, and how atoms bond to form molecules.

Through active inquiry-based exercises and experiments, students can understand the abstract concepts that can be difficult to explain, as they cannot be explored in a traditional lab.

In this Interative Personalised Virtual Lab students learn thruogh inquiry-based learning, self-directed learning and personalisation about density, sinking and flotation.

Through inquiry-based learning in a laboratory environment, students must determine if an object is made up of real or fake gold. To do this, they will need to measure the mass and volume of the object,by using scales and a graduated cylinder filled with water and then calculate the object’s density.
